Paid Options to Speed Up Security Screening - Global Entry, TSA PreCheck, Clear, Mobile Passport (Plus)
Larry and I don't have any paid options at this time, although since Larry is over 75 yrs. old he doesn't have to remove his shoes or light jacket for screening. Since our Venture card will reimburse us for $100 of the cost, I plan to begin the global entry process prior to our next trip to Seattle. I also downloaded the Mobile Passport free version to try out when we return from Cancun, Mexico.
Global Entry ($100) includes TSA PreCheck membership/benefits and lasts 5 years. This can save time returning from international flights (you can sometimes clear customs at your departure airport). You have to complete a Trusted Traveler Program (TTP) account, complete the form, pay, and schedule an in-person interview at a Global Entry Enrollment Center. Pay with your credit card (Venture will reimburse $100 for Global or PreCheck if you pay by credit card), Our closest center is almost six hours away.
TSA PreCheck ($85) also lasts 5 years. This precheck is for flights within the U.S. and has many more enrollment centers (our closest is Spokane, about two hours away). This has an application form and an in-person interview. Screening is quicker because you don't have to take off your shoes, belt, or light jacket. You don't have to remove laptop and 3-1-1 liquids from your carry-on bag.
Clear ($179/year) is only available at about 50 airports (includes Seattle, WA). It uses biometric screening to expedite for its members.
Mobile Passport (free), Mobile Passport Plus ($14.99) App: This is available at 30 airports and 4 cruise ports. It is designed to help travelers move more quickly through U.S. Customs and Border Protection checkpoints when they are returning to the United States from an international trip. The information sent from the Mobile Passport app replaces the paper forms passengers typically have to fill out prior to arrival. The free version only allows you to save information for 4 hours; fill out forms when nearing your destination; upon arrival turn on wifi or data. Make sure date and time settings are set for current, local time zone. Submit passport(s) and CBP questions. Customs will send a digital receipt (encrypted QR code receipt) that will expire after 4 hours. Follow signs for Mobile Passport Control show passport to border protection officer, and scan the bar code on your receipt.
TSA Screening Tips During Covid
Arrive 2 hours early for domestic flights, 3 hours early for international flights
Wear a mask; TSA screening officer may ask you to lower your mask for identification. Mask type: A mask (including N95s or KN95s) or 2 layered secured cloth that completely covers your nose and mouth and fits snugly to the sides of your face and under your chin OR face shields worn with a face covering, but not in place of one.
Use 6' spacing where possible.
You can bring one container (up to 12 oz) of hand sanitizer in your carry-on. It doesn't have to be in your 3-1-1 quart bag. Take out of bag for screening.
Don't wear belts, clothing with sparkles, clothing with lots of zippers/metal parts, or jewelry. They set off the metal detector.
Wear easy-to-remove shoes.
Remove coats and sweaters (unless you're older than 75).
Organize before screening; use ziplock bag to hold everything in your pockets (all change, keys, watch, pen, etc.). Place it in your carry-on.
Food and snacks can stay in your carry-on. If you can spill it, spray it, pump it, or pour it, it's NOT a solid food...not allowed.
TSA What Can I Bring List has a search bar to enter the item you're concerned about.
Make sure your carry-on meets the size and weight requirements for your airline.
Have your passport and boarding pass in an easy-to-access place. Get them out before you reach the security person.
