Many of the campgrounds fill up quickly for the summer months. Reservations can be made 6 months ahead for most of them.


Mount St. Helens 2 nights

Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park (45 min north of Elk Prairie) Note: Do Not Rely on Digital Maps

Many apps - including Google maps - do not give accurate information in this area. Visitors seeking the Tall Trees Grove Trailhead or Mill Creek Campground are often misdirected. Do not use "Bald Hills Road" as a road to get to the parks.


  • 9 mile Howland Hill Road (east onto Elk Valley Road out of Crescent City, right at the fork; becomes unpaved after 1.5 mi) to Junction w/hwy 199 near Hiouchi

    • Boy Scout Tree Trail (n. side of Howland Rd 5.3 mi in and out trail)--off the Howland Hill Road Note: Best to hike early am on a sunny day to avoid lots of tourists and just hike as far as we feel comfortable

  • Hiouchi Visitors Center (9 mi east of Crescent) off Hwy 199

    • Note: Hwy 199 is also called the Redwood Forest Road

  • Stout Memorial Grove 1/2 mi loop (3:30-4:30 pm sun slants through trees and great pics)

    • from Crescent City, drive east on Highway 199. Continue past the Jedediah Smith campground entrance, the Hiouchi Information Center, and the town of Hiouchi. Immediately after crossing the Myrtle Creek bridge, turn right and cross the Smith River on a second bridge. Pass the Forks Launch Facility and continue across Craigs Creek on another bridge. Immediately after this bridge, bear right at a 3-way intersection. Cross a short covered bridge and continue through a residential area. The paved road surface gives way to dirt as you enter the redwoods. Continue for another mile and a half until you reach a paved road to your right. Turn right onto this road to reach the Stout Grove parking area.

  • Newton B Drury Scenic Parkway (10 mi)  turn left when leaving campground instead of going onto Hwy 101; it loops back to Hwy 101 north

Camping Richardson Grove - Huckleberry Campground  6/20-6/25 (5 nights)  2-½ hrs south of Elk Prairie Campground, 123 mi.$183  The best campsites at Huckleberry Campground are 1, 3, 7, 8, 27, 28, 30, 32, 33, and 35.


Driving South, Hwy 101,from Huckleberry Camp on Thurs 6/25  Note: No reservations for 6/25, 6/26, and 6/27 in case we see a cool place to stop along the way.

Turn West at Willetts toward Fort Bragg to get to Hwy 1 (60 mi. S. of Huckleberry; 35 mi cutoff)

  • Check into scuba diving or snorkeling for 1 day  - call about a week ahead of time to see a forecast for how big waves are. You need to be able to walk in and out of the surf with all your gear on. You walk from the shop to the beach wearing your wetsuit and just put your tank and fins on at the water. You have to wear extra weight to account for the wetsuit. (approx. 2.2 lbs for every 1 mm of neoprene) I used 26.6 lb in Thailand.

For easy entry and exit of our park, please use the following directions. 

  • Traveling eastbound on Highway 180/ Kings Canyon Rd, go just past the bridge that goes over the Kings river, get in the left hand turnout lane, go about 1/8 mile, to the next road. This road is Piedra Road. Turn left on Piedra Road. Travel only about 150 yards, to the first paved road that you can turn left on. This frontage road will take you right into our park.

  • Traveling westbound on Highway 180/ Kings Canyon Rd, turn right on Piedra road and follow the above directions.

  • Please note: the speed limit on the frontage road leading into the park is 20 MPH....until just before you get to the curve.... you will then need to slow down to 5 MPH
